A113 References

All Pixar fans are familiar with the iconic A113 references in every Pixar movie. A113 (pronounced A1-13) was the classroom number used by character animation students at the California Institute of the Arts. A bunch of its alumni continued to work at Pixar, have have established this tradition of using A113 in all Pixar movies.

Buzz in Finding Nemo

Everyone knows that Finding Nemo is one of the most classic Pixar movies of all time- but did you know that Buzz Lightyear makes an appearance? That’s right! When we get a glimpse into the dentist’s waiting room, we can see Buzz Lightyear lying on the floor next to some other toys.

Buzz, however, isn’t the only easter egg that made it into this movie. In fact, Finding Nemo is loaded with them! Mike Wazowski is pictured swimming across the screen during the credits, a boy in the waiting room is seen reading a Mr. Incredible comic book, and Luigi from Cars is seen driving on a dock.

Lotso in Up

This scene occurs pretty early in the film. Carl (Up) has just found out he was going to be sent to a nursing home, so he decided to finally fulfill his late wife and his longtime dream of seeing Paradise Falls. In a montage, we get a quick glimpse of this scene, where Lotso (Toy Story 3) is sitting in the corner of a little girl’s room.

At the time of this movie, Toy Story 3 had not been released yet. Therefore, this serves as a cameo to a future Pixar movie. For those that might not know, Lotso is the villain with the sad backstory in Toy Story 3. His kid lost him at a camping trip, and wasn’t able to come back for him. Because of this, Lotso developed the idea that kids didn’t care for their toys at all and would abandon them in a second. This led to him opposing Woody in Toy Story 3.

Also in the little girl’s room is the Pixar ball and a toy plane also from Toy Story. The young girl, named Dee, can also be spotted in Toy Story 3 at Sunnyside Daycare, possibly to return Lotso to his home. Because we know what happened to Lotso before Toy Story 3, it is possible that this happened after.

“First thing you need to know about me, I’m a hugger.”

Buzz and Andy in Coco

In the movie Coco, Miguel at one point runs through the village market on the way to the central plaza. As he is running through the marketplace, he stops by a piñata stand. We can see piñatas of Buzz Lightyear and Andy. And, if you look even closer, you might see a familiar one eyed, green-skinned monster. That’s right- Mike Wazowski (Monsters, Inc.) also makes an appearance! Near the back of the piñata pack is a turquoise piñata, likely designed to be Sully, Mike’s partner.

These easter eggs might not be as random as you would think. The director of Coco, Lee Unkrich, worked on three different Toy Story movies and was also the co-director of Monsters, Inc. It totally makes sense that he would tip his hat to his previous work in animation.

Sebastian in Aladdin

Genie pulling Sebastion out of a cookbook

Sebastion makes a surprise appearance in Aladdin when the Genie is searching for a recipe to turn Aladdin into a prince. The Genie searches through his cookbook, he reaches in, and pulls out a very specific crab!

Ron Clements and John Musker next to Aladdin

This Easter egg may have been partly due to the filmmakers of this movie. Ron Clements and John Musker were the filmmakers of both The Little Mermaid and Aladdin. They also made the decision to include themselves within the movie. There is a split second in Aladdin where we see 2 men standing near him, otherwise known as Ron Clements and John Musker!

Movies in Zootopia

Zootopia is hands down one of my favorite Disney movies. Throughout the movie there are many little references to the outside world, but this Easter egg might be my favorite.

In Zootopia, we meet a street vendor named Duke Weaselton. He is busy selling different knock-off Disney movies to the buyers. These movies include Wrangled (Tangled), Pig Hero 6 (Big Hero 6), Wreck-it-Rhino (Wreck-it-Ralph), Meowana (Moana), and Floatzen 2 (Frozen 2).

Ironically, the street vendor himself is an easter egg as well. Alan Tudyk, the voice of Duke Weaselton, also voices a Disney character in Frozen– the Duke of Weselton!

“It’s called a hustle, sweetheart.”

During the song “Shiny”, from Moana, Maui finally regains his magic fishhook, and does his best to transform into a helpful animal for their situation. Moana and Maui were trapped underground in a large, wealth-obsessed crab’s lair.

Maui manages to grab his fishhook and tries to change into an eagle, but instead goes through a series of animals including a fish, a reindeer, and a pig, none of which were super helpful for them in the moment. Ironically, the reindeer Maui transforms to happens to be Sven, from the movie Frozen.

Baymax in Moana

When we are first introduced to the Kakamoras in Moana, we can see a friendly face. The iconic Baymax eyes, from Big Hero 6, are pictured on one of the Kakamoras.

This scene takes place when Moana and Maui are on the sailboat attempting to reach the island of Te Fiti to restore her heart. The ride is going pretty well, when they reach the island of the Kakamoras. Let’s just say, they know how to turn from cute to dangerous real quick!

For those who might not know, Baymax is one of the main characters in the Disney movie Big Hero 6. A teenager designs Baymax, a robot whose sole purpose is to take care of people. However, when things start to go downhill, Baymax is forced to become a superhero.

“Hello. I am Baymax, your personal healthcare companion.”

Pinocchio in Aladdin

Probably one of the more popular Easter eggs, Pinnochio has made cameos in many movies during his career.

There is a scene in Aladdin where we see Aladdin and the Genie talking about his three wishes and what he is going to do with them. Genie makes an offhanded comment about how he would love to be free. However, the only way for his to get free is for someone to wish him free.

Aladdin, being a gentleman, says that he would willingly wish the Genie free for him. The Genie immediately turned into Pinnochio (including the nose!) for a split second, not believing him.

Go ahead. Make a fool of yourself, and maybe you’ll listen to your conscience.

Mrs. Potts in Tarzan

Mrs. Potts and Chip Potts in Tarzan

During the song Trashing’ the Camp in Tarzan, you can see Terk drumming on a tea set that looks suspiciously like Mrs. Potts and Chip Potts from Beauty and the Beast. One of the teapots even includes a little chip on the rim!

This reinforces the theory that Jane, from Tarzan, is actually descended from Belle, Beauty and the Beast. Fans argue that there is no other way that Jane would have this precious tea set. There are also a few similarities between Jane and Belle. They both wear iconic yellow dresses, and have an affinity for making animal-like humans more civil. Also, both of their dads are tad bit eccentric, yet very smart.

What do you guys think? Could Jane actually have been descended from Belle?
